1.1.1.3. 고유명사 (Proper Nouns)

고유명사는 사람, 장소, 단체 등에 사용되는 특수한 명사이다.

예) MyungBak, Seoul, Hyundai 등등

보통명사와 달리 고유명사는 몇 가지 규칙이 있다.

고유명사는 항상 첫 글자가 대명사로 사용해야 한다.

사람이름, 장소, 회사, 국가 명, 요일, 월 등이 있다.

• They like John.
• I live in Australia.
• She works for Samsung.
• The last day in January is a Friday.
• We saw Titanic in the Megabox.

 

고유명사에서 기억해야 할 것은 정관사(the)를 사용해야 하는 경우와 그렇지 않은 경우가 있다.

 

The를 사용하지 않는 경우

 

사람이름, 회사명, 상점이름, 지명 등은 보통 the를 사용하지 않고 사용한다.

사람을 설명하는 특별한 수식어(President, Detective etc)가 붙는 경우 the를 사용하지 않는다.

주의) Surname을 복수로 사용해서 그 가족(일가)을 나타내기도 한다.

I met the Clintons last week.

 

회사명, 상점명, 은행, 교회, 도시, 대륙, 섬, 산, 호수 등등에도 the를 사용하지 않는다.

The와 함께 사용하는 고유명사

 

States, Kingdom, Republic 이 포함된 국명에는 the를 사용한다.

강, 바다, 대양, 운하, 산맥, 여러 개의 섬으로 이루어진 나라, 군도 등에는 the를 사용한다.

다음과 같은 종류의 이름에 주로 the를 사용한다.

이름에 of 가 포함된 경우 보통 the를 사용한다.
