1.1.1.5. 형용사처럼 사용되는 명사

명사는 사물, 사람, 장소 등을 나타내는 단어이다.

이런 명사를 설명하는 것은 형용사다.

형용사는 명사를 설명하는 역할을 하지만, 명사가 명사를 설명하면서 형용사와 같은 역할을 하기도 한다.

 

명사 (형용사 역할)	명사

다음과 같은 경우가 그 예이다.

• a race horse is a horse that runs in races
• a horse race is a race for horses
• a boat race is a race for boats
• a love story is a story about love
• a war story is a story about war
• a tennis ball is a ball for playing tennis
• tennis shoes are shoes for playing tennis
• a computer exhibition is an exhibition of computers
• a bicycle shop is a shop that sells bicycles

 

이렇게 명사가 명사를 설명하는 형용사와 같은 역할을 할 때, 보통 단수형태로 사용된다.

복수를 표시하기 위해서는 뒤에 있는 명사를 복수로 표시한다.

cigarette packet	cigarette packets

 

일부 명사는 복수의 형태로(-s)로 존재하지만, 단수로 사용된다. 이러한 명사가 다른 명사를 설명하는 형용사 역할을 하게 될 때 복수형태는 그대로 유지한다.

• a news reporter, three news reporters
• one billiards table, four billiards tables
• an athletics trainer, five athletics trainers

 

관용적으로, 일부 단어는 명사를 꾸며주는 형용사 역할을 할 때 복수형으로 사용하는 것들이 있다.

accounts department	accounts departments

 

 

명사를 설명하는 형용사 역할을 하는 명사와 실제 명사가 결합될 때 여러 가지 방식으로 표시가 된다.

 

• two separate words (car door)
• two hyphenated words (book-case)
• one word (bathroom)

하지만, 별개의 단어로 쓰는지 hyphen을 사용하는지 혹은 한 단어로 붙여서 사용하는지에 대한 별도의 규칙이 존재하지는 않는다. 심지어 3가지 모두로 사용해도 무방한 경우가 있다.

head master, head-master, headmaster

 

형용사처럼 사용되는 경우 stress는 보통 앞쪽에 둔다.

-         coffee shop

-         horse-race

-         livingroom

 

여러 개의 명사가 하나의 명사를 설명하는 형용사처럼 사용되기도 한다.

France football team doctor

police highway accident research centre

 

주로 신문의 Headline에 이와 유사한 형태의 문장이 많이 사용된다.

-         The ten best hand blenders

-         Top 10 awards for silly science

 

명사가 형용사처럼 사용되는 구문에서 실제 형용사가 함께 사용될 수 있다.

 

-         Empty coffee jar

-         Honest car dealer

-         Delicious dog food
