영어에서 명사는 셀 수 있는 명사와 셀 수 없는 명사로 나뉘어
진다. 이런 개념이 우리말에서는 중요하게 고려되지 않기 때문에 혼란을 줄 수 있지만, 상식적으로 생각해 보면 대체로 이해가 되는 내용들이다.
예를 들어,
연필이 하나 있다.
연필이 두 개 있다.
동일한 “연필”이라고 사용하지 연필들이 두 개 있다. 일반적으로는 이렇게 사용하지
않는다.
동일한 내용을 영어로 하면,
아래와 같이 분명한 차이가 있다.
There is a pencil.
There are two pencils.
(단수, 복수에 따라서 동사의 형태도 달라지는 점도 유념하기
바란다. 주어가 3인칭 단수명사가 오는 경우라면, 일반동사는 –s를 붙여야 한다.
예. He loves his girlfriend.)
가끔 단수, 복수의
사용이 정확히 표시가 되지 않는다면 영어를 모국어로 하는 사람들은 어감이 이상하다는 느낌을 받을 수 있다. 아주
미세하고, 별것 아닌 것 같은 내용이지만, 분명히 지켜야
좀 더 자연스럽고 명료한 문장이 된다.
영어에서 명사는 셀 수 있는 명사와 셀 수 없는 명사, 그리고 둘 다 사용가능 한 경우가 있다.
Countable Nouns
셀 수 있는 물건들이다. 다음과
같은 단어들이 있다.
pen, car, cassette, lamp,
hat, cup, bottle, bag, dog, photo, phone, bird, bridge
셀 수 있기 때문에 단수와 복수가 존재한다.
I bought a bag.
He gave me three bags.
셀 수 있는 명사는
a/an/the/my/some/any/few/many 등의 한정사들과 함께 사용되어야 하며, 복수의
경우는 단독으로 사용될 수 있다.
A dog is an animal.
This dog is mine.
I want an orange.
I like apples.
Dogs are animal.
I’ve got some dollars.
Have you got any questions?
I’ve got a few dollars.
I haven’t got many chairs.
단수로 사용되면 단어를 그대로 사용한다. 복수면 –s를 붙여서 여러 개라는 것을 표시한다. 그런데 문제가 있다. 모든 단어가 –s를 추가 해서 복수를 표시하는 것이 아니라는 것이다.아래에서 어떤
경우들이 있는지 확인하자.
위 예문에서 보았듯이 보통의 경우는 단어의 끝에 –s를 붙여서 복수를 나타낸다.
